solar energy articles : global warming - "Tell Me All About Global Warming"

By: Randolph Lindquist

You can't swing a dead cat without hearing about "global warming" these days. There's no shortage of people like you and me and celebrities getting plenty excited about it. Experts offering proofs and disproofs abound. What the heck is it? What exactly is global warming? With so many pressing problems in our world, are we wasting our time by getting involved in what many claim to be media hype a media hoax? Why do so many seem to be "debating" the issue? Arethere actually clear-cut dangers lurking in our future?

Anybody who knows (or doesn't know), scientists and people like you and me, explain global warming as the process of Planet Earth's temperatures running amuck, rising at rates that threaten with alarming possibilities. Our world is getting hotter. And who or what do we blame? Greenhouse gases appear to be the cause behind global warming, and these are the byproduct of thoughtless industries generating pollution without regard for consequences.

Thirty or forty years into the future-- is that beyond our comprehension? Do we have the future to plan ahead? I remeber a line from the now vintage TV show St. Elsewhere, delivered by the priest who founded the hospital upon which the show was based: "We're here to leave the world better than we found it. Otherwise, what's the point?" Rising temperatures. Alarming storms. Earthquakes becoming more devastating. World-wide flooding. Ice caps melting. Coastlines disappearing underwater. That's global warming for you. Is your interest piqued?

Are we already suffering from global warming? Many believe we are, citing the growing unpredictability of weather conditions and higher temperatures recorded worldwide. Many believe we aren't, attributing these changes to other known or unknown factors-- and often failing to provide scientific evidence to support toheir disclaims. The stakes are high. Our children and grandchildren risk being devastated by the decisions we make today.

Scientists, pseudo-scientists, politicians and celebrities dominate the global warming debate. It's not hard to find someone whose opinions we've come to respect and trust point-blank denying that there is such a thing as global warming. Often, opponents of the global warming theory claim that curtailing greenhouse gas emissions can have a disastrous effect on our economy, with the fallout being far worse than any horrors that global warming could provide. As you can well imagine, both sides of the debate rely on rock-solid and undeniable proof to substantiate their claims.

So what are the tactics presently in use when discussing global warming? What's behind the rhetoric? You can expect those who believe that global warmng is a real threat to appeal to your sense of decency and to your parental responsibility to offer your children and grandchildren a world that's livable. You can expect those who believe global warming is a hoax to "attack the messenger" by engaging the testimony of pseudo-scientists to refute claims-- and by attacking the credibility of those who favor taking actions to counter global warming trends. Listen enough to both sides and both approaches will become clear as you listen to the words.

For better or worse, we are not the only species on this planet. Regardless of anyone's stance on global warming, animals who rely on coral reefs and our waters for their survival will suffer from the growing toxins that we constantly release into the ocean. Wildlife, too, will suffer. Think polar bears. Care to do something abut it?

Take a stand on global warming, please. The future is at stake. But think. Do not allow yourself to be persuaded by emotional rhetoric. Ask for the facts, ma'am, just the facts. Beware of pseudo-scientists in sheep's clothing disguising opinions as facts!
